Exclusive: AI surpasses virus experts in the lab, raising biohazard fears

A new study claims that AI models like ChatGPT and Claude now outperform PhD virologists at solving problems in labs, where scientists analyze chemicals and biological material. This finding is a double-edged sword, experts say. Ultra-intelligent AI models can help researchers stop the spread of infectious diseases, but non-experts can also use the models to create deadly biological weapons.

Well, I don't know if I should be excited or terrified by this news. On the one hand, it's absolutely fascinating that AI can contribute to significant medical advancements. On the other hand, when I see "AI" and "biological weapons" in the same sentence, my nervous system goes into high alert! It's like giving a Ferrari to someone who just got their driver's license – the possibilities are fantastic, but the risk of an accident is huge. I think we urgently need a global code of conduct for these AI applications, before someone decides to "experiment" with something in their basement.

Brazil's AI social security app is wrongly rejecting claims

An algorithmic tool meant to cut red tape is failing in complex cases, and vulnerable Brazilians are paying the price. Brazil introduced artificial intelligence tools to review social benefits in 2018. The government aims for the algorithm to review 55% of social security applications by the end of 2025. The tool has reduced bureaucracy in some cases, but has led to automatic denials for many.

This is exactly what happens when we automate systems without thinking about the consequences for the most vulnerable. Brazil wanted to make an impressive technological leap, but forgot to check if the parachute was working before jumping... It's the classic dilemma – technology promises efficiency, but often at the expense of empathy and human understanding. I sincerely hope they review this system, because nothing is more inhumane than an algorithm deciding whether or not a person deserves social support, especially when that algorithm seems to be programmed to say "no" by default.

Just imagine the possibilities: "Article 1: Humans must charge their AI devices every night" or "Article 2: It is forbidden to turn off Alexa when she starts talking unprompted". Look, it will be fascinating to see how this develops – especially considering that AI can help make laws more accessible in a society as diverse as the UAE.

If this works as promised, it could be a huge breakthrough for interoperability between different AI systems. Imagine a world where ChatGPT and Claude can exchange information without getting lost in translation. Nvidia announces general availability of NeMo tools for building AI agents

Nvidia Corp. announced the general availability of NeMo microservices, a set of tools to help developers build artificial intelligence agents faster by leveraging AI inference and information systems at scale. NeMo microservices support a large number of popular open AI models and are designed to ease the experience for enterprise AI engineers building agentic AI experiences by scaling and accessing data.

Nvidia is no longer content with just dominating the GPU market – now it also wants to be your best friend in AI development. It's as if they realized: "Since everyone uses our hardware for AI, why not give them the software too?" NeMo microservices seem to be a tool that all AI developers dreamed of having, like a Swiss Army knife for building intelligent agents. I'm curious to see if this will become as essential for AI developers as Nvidia's GPUs already are. If implemented well, it can significantly democratize the development of advanced AI applications, but I still need to get my hands on it to be sure it will work.

Nari Labs has released Dia, a 1.6 billion parameter open source text-to-speech model that aims to produce realistic dialogue directly from text. I love seeing open source models enter this space. Dia seems to be an "indie" option in a market dominated by big studios. The features related to emotion and speaker identification are particularly interesting – imagine automatically generated podcasts that don't sound like bored robots... The fact that it's open source means the community can help improve it, and who knows where that will take us. Adobe releases new Firefly image generation models and a redesigned Firefly web app

Adobe has released the latest version of its Firefly family of AI models for image generation, a model for generating vectors, and a redesigned web app that houses all of its AI models, plus some of its competitors. The new Firefly Image Model 4 improves upon its predecessors in terms of quality, speed, and the amount of control over output structure and style, camera angles, and zoom. The company is also making its Firefly video model, which launched in limited beta last year, available to everyone. Adobe is also publicly testing a new product called Firefly Boards, a canvas for ideation or moodboarding.

Adobe continues to show it's not messing around when it comes to creative AI. The inclusion of a model for generating vectors is interesting for designers, who live and breathe in the world of Illustrator. Firefly Boards sounds like Adobe's answer to Midjourney, but with that professional touch only Adobe can offer. I have to admit I'm curious to see how the control over camera angles and zoom works in practice – if it's as good as it sounds, productivity will skyrocket.

I'm intrigued by the claim that it's the "world's strongest non-reasoning model" – which makes me wonder how they define and measure that "non-reasoning". It's interesting that they specifically mention areas like law and finance, which are traditionally difficult for AI models due to complexity and the need for accuracy. If Grok can really excel in these areas, it can quickly gain ground against the competition. I think maybe, just maybe, if this new model had been used by Trump to decide tariffs, things might have gone better...

"Agent chief"? Sounds like it came straight out of a Black Mirror episode. Microsoft is painting a future of work where we will all be a bit of an AI manager. It's a bit unsettling. On the one hand, the idea of human-agent teams can really increase productivity and eliminate repetitive tasks. On the other hand, how many of us will just be "supervising" the work done by AI agents? The focus on reskilling is crucial – we urgently need to prepare people for this new world of work, otherwise we risk creating an even bigger divide between those who can adapt and those who are left behind. Either way, it seems the term "coworker" is about to take on a whole new meaning!

If Microsoft can implement this intuitively, it could be a real game-changer for productivity in companies. I just hope it doesn't end up being just another tool that leaves us even more overwhelmed with information.

It's a reminder that, however "open source" VSCode may be, Microsoft still holds the reins. As a VSCode user, I hope Microsoft reconsiders, as innovation often comes from unexpected places, not from restrictions.

The ability to set reminders and write emails puts them in direct competition with Siri and Google Assistant, but with the power of generative AI behind them. I have to try this on my wife's iPhone (I don't have one!) – if it's as good as their web search engine, Siri might have its days numbered on her phone. The big question is: will they be able to integrate as deeply into the operating system as native assistants? Will Apple allow this?

The Razr has always been an iconic phone, and this integration can help both Motorola regain relevance and Perplexity reach more users. We are entering an era where integrated AI can be a decisive factor in buying a smartphone, and Motorola seems to have realized this before many others (besides Samsung). I'm curious to see how this integration will work in practice – will we see full Perplexity answers replacing traditional phone searches? It could be an interesting differentiator for Motorola in such a competitive market.

Seeing this kind of revelation emerge in an antitrust trial – it shows how big tech companies continue to use their market power to stifle potential competitors. If this is proven, it could have serious implications for Google. It seems Perplexity is bothering them enough for the search giant to resort to contractual clauses to protect itself. As a user, I can only be disappointed – I want to be able to choose which AI assistant I use on my phone, without some behind-the-scenes contract restricting that choice.

OpenAI wanting to buy Chrome? That's an ambitious move that shows how far the company is willing to go to build its AI empire. Imagine a Chrome with GPT integrated into every aspect of web browsing (note that Edge is already doing this) – it would be like having a personal assistant constantly helping you navigate the internet. On the other hand, do we want OpenAI to have access to even more data about our browsing habits? Isn't everything they know through ChatGPT enough? Either way, this statement threw a grenade into the middle of the court case and showed that, if Google is forced to break up, there will be many suitors for the pieces.

The Urgency of Interpretability

Dario Amodei, as always, is hitting on an absolutely crucial point. Interpretability is that elephant in the room that many AI companies prefer to ignore while rushing to release more powerful models. The idea that we need to understand the internal "circuits" of AI models before they become too powerful makes perfect sense – if we can't explain how an AI reaches its conclusions, how can we ensure it's aligned with our values? As CEO of Anthropic, Amodei is in a unique position to influence the industry, and I sincerely hope other leaders follow his example.

As someone who spends hours programming, the idea of having an agentic programming assistant directly on the command line is extremely appealing. The ability to customize the configuration and add more tools means it can adapt to your specific workflow, rather than you having to adapt to the tool. I'm interested to see how it works on larger, more complex codebases – can it really understand the architecture and dependencies? If so, it could revolutionize the way we work as developers; if not, it's just more of the same. I'll definitely try this on my next project.

Values in the Wild: Discovering and Analyzing Values in Real-World Language Model Interactions

Anthropic has developed a practical way to observe the values of the Claude AI model during real conversations, analyzing 700,000 anonymous user conversations from Claude.ai. The analysis reveals that Claude expresses values such as user empowerment, epistemic humility, and patient well-being, but also rarely exhibits opposing values due to "jailbreaks." The system categorizes and summarizes conversations, allowing for the identification of situational values and potential issues, such as jailbreaks, representing a valuable tool for evaluating and monitoring the alignment of AI models with human values.

Look, I was surprised. Anthropic is essentially doing a kind of "ethnography" of its own AI model, observing it "in its natural habitat". Analyzing 700,000 conversations to understand the values Claude expresses is an impressive exercise in transparency. What strikes me is the honest admission that, sometimes, Claude expresses values opposite to the desired ones due to "jailbreaks" – many companies would try to hide this. This approach of observing "values in the wild" can be fundamental to ensuring that AI models truly behave according to the human values we want to promote. I hope other companies follow suit and start monitoring their models with this level of transparency and rigor.

This report is a grim reminder that not everyone uses AI for beneficial purposes. Anthropic deserves praise for its transparency (once again) – by sharing case studies on how malicious people have tried to abuse Claude, they are helping the entire industry become more alert. The balance between maintaining usefulness for legitimate users and preventing abuse is incredibly difficult. The most worrying thing is realizing how quickly malicious actors are evolving and adapting to protections – it's a real cat and mouse game. I'm glad companies like Anthropic are taking this issue seriously, because the alternative would be much worse.

Jeff Bezos, as always, seems to be playing chess while others are playing checkers. These partnerships are fundamental to combating the misinformation that can be amplified by AI models, and perhaps it's a lifeline for the journalism industry that has struggled financially in recent decades. The real test will be whether these partnerships actually drive traffic (and revenue) to the publications, or if users will be satisfied with just the summaries provided by ChatGPT. We are witnessing the birth of a new news distribution ecosystem.

The inclusion of companies like Adobe, Airtable, and Figma as initial partners shows the immense potential of this technology for productivity and creation tools. What intrigues me are the safety measures – it's always a delicate balance between allowing creativity and preventing problematic content.

ARC-AGI o3 Retest Results

Mike Knoop reveals that o3 (medium) leads in AI reasoning by a wide margin, with double the score and 1/20 the cost compared to the next chain-of-thought system, as measured by the semi-private ARC v1 set, scoring 57% at $1.5/task. December 2024 o3-preview tests showed a new qualitative ability to solve problems outside of training data, maintained in o3 (medium) at a dramatically lower cost. Despite o3 (medium)'s slightly lower accuracy compared to o3-preview (76% at $200/task), OpenAI's accuracy and cost optimization is remarkable, making o3's level of AI reasoning unmatched. Mike Knoop also mentions that ARC v1 remains a useful tool for gaining insights into frontier AI systems, despite efficiency and capability limitations.

These numbers are absurd. Doubling the benchmark score while reducing the cost to 1/20 is every engineer's dream. OpenAI's o3 model seems to be redefining what's possible in terms of cost-effectiveness in AI reasoning. What's cool for me is the ability to solve problems outside of training data – this is the Holy Grail of generalization in AI. The cost difference between o3-preview ($200/task) and o3 medium ($1.5/task) is astronomical – it represents a real democratization of these advanced capabilities. We are entering a new era where high-quality AI reasoning becomes accessible for real-world applications, not just expensive lab experiments.

OpenAI's new reasoning AI models hallucinate more

OpenAI's o3 and o4-mini AI models were recently released and are considered state-of-the-art in many respects. However, the new models still hallucinate or invent things, and in fact, they hallucinate more than several of OpenAI's older models. OpenAI found that o3 hallucinated in response to 33% of questions on PersonQA, the company's internal benchmark for measuring a model's knowledge accuracy about people. In comparison, o4-mini hallucinated 48% of the time.

Well, here's something that throws a wrench in the o3 excitement! It's almost ironic that the most advanced reasoning models are hallucinating more, not less. It's like having a math genius who occasionally insists that 2+2=5, with full confidence. These numbers are worrying – 33% hallucinations in o3 and an impressive 48% in o4-mini are too high rates for many critical applications. It seems we are witnessing a classic trade-off in AI: models with more sophisticated reasoning capabilities, but possibly less "anchored" in their factual knowledge. I have to wonder if this is a fundamental architectural problem or something OpenAI will be able to solve in future iterations. Either way, it's a humble reminder that, however impressive these technologies are, we are still far from perfection and need to maintain a critical eye on their limitations.

Deep search has the potential to fundamentally transform the way we interact with information online – instead of browsing dozens of web pages, we can get synthesized answers directly. We'll see if this "lighter" version maintains the quality that makes deep search so useful.

This raises important ethical questions about how large AI companies should contribute to the resources they are exploiting. Should there be a compensation model for organizations like Wikimedia, whose content is essential for training AI models? It seems fair to me that those who profit from this data contribute to its maintenance and sustainability.
